My main current research interests are in self-presentation, interpersonal relations, and wishful thinking. I am interested in a variety of problems in self-presentation, including the perceived morality of self-presentation; understanding the self-presentation goals of low self-monitors; motivations for, and consequences of, bragging and modesty. A related interest concerns the relationship between how people construe the “self” and self-presentation. My interests in wishful thinking focus on distinguishing it from other positive orientations such as realistic optimism.

I am also interested in stereotyping. In this area, I am examining positive stereotypes. The focus of this research is on understanding responses to positive stereotypes, which are in some ways similar to, and in other ways dissimilar from, responses to negative stereotypes.

Primary Interests:

  • Interpersonal Processes
  • Motivation, Goal Setting
  • Prejudice and Stereotyping
  • Self and Identity
  • Social Cognition
